How to Calculate the Cost of Spray Foam Insulation
When properly installed, attic insulation helps homeowners save on energy bills and live more comfortably by filling gaps and holes that allow outside air to enter a home, while conditioned air escapes. This air leakage can account for 25-40% of the energy used to heat a home and cool it. Spray foam insulation is so effective at stopping this penetration of air, that it can also reduce the amount of moisture in an attic or crawl space – another key factor in decreasing utility usage and monthly bills.
Spray Foam Insulation and Fire Safety: What You Need to Know
To calculate your spray foam insulation project, you first need to find out how many square feet of surface area the project will cover. This can be done with a measuring tape, calculator or by simply counting the number of studs in the wall (studs are usually 16″ apart). This gives you the length and height of the area that needs to be insulated. This information is then multiplied by the cost per board foot to get your rough estimate of the cost of your spray foam project.
Once you know the surface area that will be insulated, you can determine which spray foam insulation type is best for your project. We recommend choosing a low-VOC product that will require less off-gassing, allowing for quicker and easier re-occupancy time. You will also need to decide whether the attic will be vented or unvented. If you have decided on open or closed cell spray foam, you can then figure out how much you need to order for your project.
